Real History
Pseudoscience and conspiracy theories aren't welcome.
Professional historians have a depth and discipline to their education that you don't get by watching YouTube videos or cable TV. If you want to contradict them, do it through the peer review process. This is not the place.
*Ancient* History
History, by definition, begins with the recorded word. Some recent prehistory is both relevant and appropriate and will be allowed, but topics like human ancestry belongs in another sub. Our terminus post quem might be 4,000 BC, or maybe a little older, depending on the topic.

Not Recent History
Medieval history, Renaissance history, and 20th century history have their own subreddits. Content here should pertain to the ancient world. In the Western (Old) World, I'm using the fall of Rome as a general cutoff, but in other parts of the world different metrics apply.

No more AI video or AI-written text posts or scripts.
This is a quality issue. From what we've seen over the past few months, the content submitted using this technology has been low-effort in content and production quality. It's error-ridden and devoid of substance.
Computer voice narration is acceptable at this point, but be advised that your karma will suffer for it.
No Spam
REDDITORS: Do not report things you don't like as spam. We will TOS you for Report Abuse.
Spam is repeated and blatant promotion of a site elsewhere. I don't mind occasional mention of a YouTube channel. We all want to find good content that we can follow. If somebody ends every post with "check out my channel", report that.
Promotion should accompany quality contribution. If the content is glib and meaningless, it's spam. If the content is meaningful and original, let's allow it.
No Modern Politics
History is often relevant to the modern world. Lately, we've had an influx of low-quality or contentious posts comparing one aspect of the modern world with the ancient. We are placing a ban on this topic. We hope the need for it will go away soon.
Posts Include Context
Image posts should include context. If you post a pic of a helmet, give us a date and location or something we can work with. No "drive-by" karma farming, thank you.
I won't delete these posts first. I'll ask you to give us some information.
Before you report for this reason, engage with the original poster and try to draw out the context. A polite "Hey, nice pic. Where's that from?" or something should encourage participation. If no further engagement is forthcoming, hit that button.
Be Kind to Each Other
Differences of opinion sometimes arise in history subs. Work toward a goal of discovering the truth, not of being right, and you'll find that conflicting discussions are easier to manage, contribute more to the community, and are less embarrassing if you turn out wrong or change your mind.
We love you guys. We love history. Let's make sure the community stays clear of toxic participants who might put off newcomers, and we'll continue to grow.
