Posts must be made in Good Faith
There are a number of controversial topics that frequently come up in /r/dogs. While those topics are free to be discussed, they also attract a fair amount of people looking to shout down opposing viewpoints. All posts, especially those on controversial topics, must be made in good faith.
This rule also applies to users who ask for opinions/help/advice and lash out when their views/actions are not validated.
Minimize Antagonism outside of r/dogs
Posts and comments containing the name of certain subreddits are automatically removed to limit brigading. Users harassing others for a post made in /r/dogs will be permanently banned, regardless of where the harassment occurred. This includes harassment in private/direct messages, chats, and in other subreddits. It also includes cross-posting or sharing /r/dogs content to other subreddits where the intention is to mock or berate an individual for their beliefs, words, or actions.
Training Advice must follow Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive methods (LIMA)
Dangerous, Unethical or Illegal Advice is not tolerated
Posts and comments that endorse violence, abuse, theft, trespassing, or otherwise intentionally breaking/circumventing laws or regulations (regardless of intent) are prohibited.
ESA/SD Fraud or Misrepresentation is Prohibited
Endorsing misrepresentation of a pet dog as service dog (SD), service dog in training (SDIT), emotional support animal (ESA), or other support/working animal to gain privileges or access reserved for these categories is prohibited. Linking to or promoting use of scam registration sites for SD/SDiT/ESA is also prohibited. Some countries do require identification or certification. Other countries, including the United States, do not. Only resources to legitimate registration channels are allowed.
Asking or Providing Medical Advice is Prohibited
We recognize that your advice was meant to help someone in need, but specific veterinary care can and should only be provided by a veterinary professional in a valid client-patient relationship to that owner and animal. We do not allow "at home' diagnosis, anecdotes regarding treatment, recommendations to induce vomiting at home, homemade food recipes, advice regarding medications (prescription and/or OTC), and other medical advice deemed prima caie, unethical, dangerous or illegal
Avoid Low Effort Posts
Per, Post Content Limitations, particularly under 'Low-Effort'. This includes, but is not exhaustive, posts that: simply link an article or study without proper effort given to curate discussion, 'does anyone else' x,y,z, AITA style posts about situations, and/or other topics/situations that are covered in our Greatest Hits may be removed.
Breed or Breed Group Misinformation or Hate is Not Welcome
Posts and/or comments that push unrealistic agendas relating to Breeds or Breed groups are not welcomed. Users who attack or demean others for their breed choice may be banned based off infraction. Information must be factual and not sensationalized. Examples can include, but is not limited to: 'x' breed needing a firm hand or punishment based training, fear mongering of any breed, demeaning or attacking others for their dog's breed(s), or otherwise unsavory remarks/judgment.
Vet Medicine Misinformation is Prohibited
Anti-science or otherwise veterinary field misinformation is prohibited. Healthy skepticism such as over-vaccination, use of titer tests, varied heart worm or flea preventative due to climate, are normal and welcome concerns to be discussed on the subreddit. Those who push that vaccinations are outright dangerous or otherwise unneeded, claims that vet's are 'paid by big vet med or get unethical kickbacks' from prescriptions, prescription diets, or items sold in their clinics will be removed.
Posts must be On-Topic
Posts and comments should be on topic for the subreddit. Posts that ask about human health concerns such as 'Puppy nipped me, do I have Rabies?' or comments that do not pertain to the context of a given post may be removed.
