r/boxoffice Subreddit Rules

1

Posts should be related to the box office and the movie business.

Posts with the latest box office numbers, analysis, or speculation are encouraged. Movie business news is also allowed, such as a potential merger or quarterly financial results.

Memes and humor posts are also not allowed. For such content, please use r/boxofficecirclejerk.

Violation reason: Not related to the box office or movie business.
2

News about a film that can be a jumping-off point for box office predictions is also allowed.

This means trailers, critic and audience reviews, and announcements for new films being developed, release dates, directors, major casting news etc. Make sure the film in question is getting a theatrical release, and that the studio reports box office numbers.

Violation reason: Not an approved type of film news, or the movie in question won't be getting a theatrical release.
3

All posts need a region flair.

These flairs let people know what region your box office information is about and/or what type of news or discussion your post is for. If the box office number covers multiple regions, use the "International" flair.

Violation reason: No region flair, or the flair is inaccurate.
4

Be respectful to others.

There's no reason to be disrespectful to others, especially since in the end we're just talking about movies. If you disagree with someone, you can explain to them why your opinion is different instead of calling them a nasty name.

Flaming, trolling, and fanboy wars are not allowed.

Tagging users to argue about their opinions is not allowed.

Please be respectful to box office trackers/analysts, there is zero tolerance for personal attacks, name-calling, or mockery of previous predictions.

Violation reason: Not being respectful to others. (e.g. flaming or trolling)
5

We prefer original and high-quality sources; no self-promotion allowed.

The sources in the Box Office Resources section are reputable. Websites on this list are not, due to clickbait/rumors/data concerns; you may send a modmail message with the post's URL for manual review/approval. The moderators reserve the right to remove posts from other sources.

Do not post a link to promote your website, blog or YouTube channel/videos, especially if it's off-topic. You may be banned for self-promotion.

Violation reason: Low-quality source or rumors from unreputable source
6

No duplicate content.

Unless the additional source offers new information, there should only be one post per a piece of new news. For questions and discussion topics, at minimum make sure nobody asked the same thing in the past day. The moderators reserve the right to remove other posts as well if they are too repetitive of past threads.

Violation reason: Duplicate content.
7

Post titles should reflect the post's content.

No misleading, clickbait-style, or unnecessarily opinionated titles.

Feel free to make a post's title different from the title of its source, as long as that new title accurately represents the contents of the post or article in a clear and concise manner (i.e. not a word salad that cherry picks one random throwaway line, or adds excessive irrelevant information). When possible, please keep the article's original title intact and add additional relevant information to it.

8

Tag spoilers for films that are less than a month old.

If a movie was released in the domestic market less than a month ago, tag all spoilers. Posting untagged spoilers may result in a temporary ban.

Violation reason: Untagged spoilers for a film that was released less than a month ago
9

No low quality / low effort posts

Low quality or low effort text / poll posts featuring little or no analysis in the body of the text will be removed. This includes but is not limited to:

  • "What are your predictions for [insert movie]?"
  • "Which movie will make more, [insert movie] or [insert movie]?"
  • "Which movie will open higher on [insert weekend]?"
  • Posts with only a poster (exceptions for Throwback Tuesday).

We like for people to throw in a bit more effort in their posts including data, suggestions, analysis, etc.

10

Twitter links are banned

Twitter links are banned. Please submit tweets as screenshots that include the Twitter handle, the entire tweet, and the tweet timestamp.

Violation reason: self promotion
11

"Let's reminisce about a movie" posts are only allowed on Tuesday

These posts need to include a "Throwback Tuesday" flair. Posts can start to appear at 12:00 a.m. EST on Tuesdays, until 11:59 p.m. EST. Anything posted before or after this time period will be removed. Movies have to be released in a period of 5 years - 1/5/10/15/20/25... years ago. Only 2 movies per user, and the date must be in close proximity to the anniversary post (E.g. If a movie came out on November 23, the anniversary post should be posted if it's 3 days away at most).

12

Don't post illegal streaming websites/pirated versions of films links.

We don't want to promote piracy nor illegal streaming. Any violation of this rule will result in a ban for the user.

Violation reason: Don't post links to illegal streaming websites/pirated versions of films.
13

Posts about daily/weekend box office updates should be for movies with a certain threshold gross.

Daily grosses: Films must gross $500k+ or be in first 2 weeks of release.

Weekend Estimates: Films must gross $500k+ or be in first 2 weekends of release.

Films expanding from limited to wide release will have the above criteria applied from date of expansion

Weekend Domestic Actuals: Films must be in the Top 3 or their opening weekend. Same rules for Tuesday posts for 4-day weekends.

International Actuals must be $500k+

Exceptions will be made for some milestones (e.g. passing $100M).

14

Stay on topic.

This is a subreddit about numbers, not necessarily about the quality (or lack thereof) of a particular movie. Please remain on-topic and keep opinions/arguments/thoughts about unrelated aspects of the film off of these threads. If applicable: comments engaging in culture war arguments (race/gender/sexuality/"wokeness"/"DEI" etc.) will be removed and should be presumed to result in a ban. If your comment can be read as a dog whistle for decreased diversity/representation it will result in a ban.

Violation reason: Please stay on topic.
15

Usage of Automated Tools for posts and comments is prohibited.

Usage of such automated tools for optimizing post times and schedules, automatically generating comments, etc. are not allowed and suspected use of these tools will result in a ban. We want to give each user a fair chance to create the discussions that they like.
