r/Africa Subreddit Rules

Rule 1: Be respectful to others and maintain civility

Comments must remain civilized and respectful; incivility prompts immediate mod action.
Do not advocate for or incite violence.
Racism, sexism, homophobia, and all forms of discrimination result in a permanent ban.
Harassment, threats, or violence against moderators will result in an immediate, unappealable permanent ban.

Rule 2: Posts must be related to Africa (Macro Platform Focus)

Content must discuss Africa or issues relevant to Africans.
We are a macro platform. Focus on continent-wide or regional issues. Hyper-local or single-country news will be redirected to country subreddits.
Unrelated international issues or contentious outrage-bait topics will be removed.
Accurately use the post flairing system.
This is an English-language subreddit. For French, go to r/Afrique.

Rule 3: Follow Reddiquette, Reddit rules, and submission guidelines

Follow all Reddit rules and Rediquette.
No crossposts or reposts.
Text posts need a body; use link submissions for URLs.
Bold claims must be substantiated.
Link submissions require a submission statement quoting the article.
No caps lock abuse, consecutive spam, or Google AMP links.
Fact-check all videos. Short videos require a detailed contextual summary in the comments.

Rule 4: No editorializing, screenshots, questionable sources, and misinformation

No screenshots of any kind are allowed.
Add a link to the original source article where possible.
No blogs, blogspam, or questionable sources.
No editorializing of content or title.
Copy original titles word-for-word (subtitles excluded).
Needlessly editorialized image posts will be removed.
Always cite sources for history, science, or academia.
Misinformation and unverified rumors lead to immediate bans.

Rule 5: No memes, social media videos, AI technology, and low-quality content

No social media (TikTok, IG, FB, X). Sourced YouTube is allowed but subject to mod removal.
No low-effort posts, memes, clickbait, or listicles.
No NSFW content of any kind.
No AI-generated content (text, images, deepfakes).
No celebrity news, soccer worship, or lifestyle vlogs.
Redirects: Wildlife/travel to r/TravelAfrica; music to r/AfricanMusic; food/fun to r/AfricaUpdate or r/Africans; Saturated questions to r/AskAnAfrican.

Rule 6: No brigading

What is brigading? Brigading is a coordinated effort by a group of users (often originating from another subreddit or off-site community) to manipulate voting scores, spam comments, or intentionally disrupt the normal flow of conversation in targeted threads.
Do not participate in or encourage the invasion of other subreddits.
Accounts bringing coordinated outside interference into this subreddit will be banned.

Rule 7: No external pseudo-expertise and agenda pushing

No pseudohistory, or afrocentric revisionism. Claims must be backed by academic consensus, not fringe theories.
Do not project onto a continent based solely on ethnicity or speak over native Africans' lived realities.
No racial condescension, foreign paternalism, nor and savior complex. Personal experience does not replace credibility.
Accounts pushing agendas, narratives, or deliberate misinformation will be banned without notice.

Rule 8: No unsanctioned questions, inquiries, surveys, or promotion

No promotion is allowed (direct or indirect, including personal links, self-promotion, and stealth marketing).
Questions must follow guidelines. Bad faith discussions may lead to a permanent ban.
Surveys are strictly prohibited.
Charities, events, or other solicitations require explicit prior consent from the mod team.

Rule 9: African Discussion post restrictions and user verification

Posts flaired "African Discussion" are strictly restricted to verified, flaired African users.
Comments from unverified or unflaired users on these specific posts will be auto-removed.
Non-African users are welcome and encouraged to participate in all other discussions.
To request a user flair, contact the moderators via modmail.

Rule 10: Privacy, Doxxing, and Moderation Disputes

No sharing private or identifying information (doxxing) about yourself or others.
Respect the privacy of all individuals and communities discussed.
Do not argue with moderators in the comments or derail threads with moderation complaints.
To appeal a removed post, comment, or ban, you must contact the mod team.
